Home Learning with Microsoft Teams

With Microsoft Teams, your school  can create collaborative classrooms, connect in professional learning communities, communicate with school staff, coordinate lessons across the school and keep in touch with pupils remotely all from a single experience in Office 365 for Education.

Below are some simple tips and guides to help you get going.

Logging onto Teams

Using an internet browser sign in with your Microsoft 365 username and password and click on the Teams icon.

The Microsoft Teams App

If you haven't done so, download the Teams app. This will download the app onto your local PC, iPad or Android tablet. This will work like a standard app on any device. You maybe prompted to do this when you login. If not click here to download the app (for Windows), or, for iPad go to the App Store or on a tablet, go to the Google Play Store.

When you have download the app you won't have to login to Office 365, you can simply just use the app.

Creating a Team

To build a Team from scratch:

  1. First, click Teams on the left hand side of the app, then click 'Join or Create a Team'

  3. Choose Build a Team from scratch

  4. Next, you'll want to choose what kind of Team you want this to be

  5. Name your Team and add an optional description

Adding members to a Team

  1. If you're a Team owner, go to the Team name in the Teams list and click More options  > Add member
Start typing the user details of the person you want to add to the Team

  2. When you're finished adding members, select Add. You can make someone a Team owner by selecting the down arrow next to the word Member. This could be useful if there is a job share.

  3. Select Close. People you add to a Team will receive an email letting them know they are now a member of your Team and the Team will show up in their Teams list.

What is a Channel?

Teams are made up of channels, these can be considered as smaller groups within a Team. Each channel could be dedicated to a specific group, for example you could divide the Team into tables as you would in your classroom environment.

A standard channel is open for all members and anything posted is searchable by others. If you need a smaller audience for a specific project, you can create a private channel for your Team.

Creating a Channel

To create a standard channel, start in the Team list.
  1. Click the Team name and click More options

  2. Add channel

  3. Give the channel a name

  4. Add a description if you need to

  5. Click Add

  4. Add a description if you need to

  5. Under Privacy, select the down arrow on the right, and then select Private – Accessible only to a specific group of people within the team

  6. Click Next

  7. You can now add the pupils that you would like in this channel

  8. Click Done (You will notice the channel will have a lock symbol next to it)

Microsoft Onenote

Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network. Microsoft OneNote is an easy-to-use note taking and information management program. Its can be used by teachers to capture ideas and information in different digital formats. OneNote has been reviewed for being “one killer app for education” in 2010, praised for its digital note taking features. OneNote lets you create notebooks for different topics, with each notebook featuring any number of sections and unlimited pages. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users in Teams.

The OneNote Class Notebook is an app that helps you set up OneNote in your class. This app will create a class notebook, which includes three types of sub-notebooks:
  • Student Notebooks — private notebooks that are shared between each teacher and their individual students. Teachers can access these notebooks at any time, but students cannot see other students’ notebooks.
  • Content Library — a notebook for teachers to share lesson resources. Teachers can add and edit its materials, but for pupils, the notebook is read-only.
  • Collaboration Space — a notebook for all pupils and the teacher in the class to share, organize, and collaborate.

OneNote Class Notebooks have a personal workspace for every student, a content library for handouts, and a collaboration space for lessons and creative activities. Your class notebook makes it easier to collect homework, quizzes, exams and handouts. Students go to the content library to get their assignments.
